Waterpump replacement
Author Last Post
Thanks Ross - I spoke to Johnny after I posted this.
Actually, it wasn't the studs that broke, the heads of the M6 bolts broke off. Seemed to me that the waterpump had been changed before and someone put it together w/o anti-seize, always a recipe for corrosion with steel bolts into aluminum. All the nuts came off the studs with no problem - go figure.
Hi Tom,

I assume you broke the 5 10mm studs on the right side of the water pump. It's a 6 hr job to remove and replace the timing cover water pump etc. He changing the tube because that is where the studs go in other words the studs bolt into the tube housing not the engine. There should be no drilling required unless he is reusing the tube housing. I think you can get the tube housing off the engine without removing the timing cover. But I was just changing a leaking timing cover gasket.

Johnny is back from his cruise. I'm sure he will chime in.

Hello all -
Had a leaking waterpump on my 1990, assumed no big deal. When removing old pump, I managed to break the heads off of 6 of the 7 M6 bolts that were holding it on. No matter how careful I was [even using a 1/4 inch drive socket to minimize torque], they twisted right off. Anyway, I couldn't get the broken bolts out, so I had it towed to my mechanic, and he is quoting $950+ to remove the front cover, drill out the bolts, replace the coolant "tube" running behind the radiator, and replace the waterpump. Seems a bit steep, but hoped to get some opinions from people more familiar with what is involved.
