High Oil Pressure Problem
Author Last Post
Just replaced the sensor today, and the one I replaced was the longer one of the two, as Johnny told me that was the one to replace, as Like I said in earlier post that there are 2 sensors in this area.Well, as usual, Johnny was correct, the longer one below was the problem one, as now pressure reads fine. Was a tight spot to get a wrench on, as the largest open end wrench I have is a 1" and this was a little larger and adjustable wrench would not fit, so I modified the adjustable wrench by grinding on the wrench with bench grinder and it worked fine. The replacement unit I was sent I was able to use the 1" open end wrench and it went to place very easy.
To Dallas: had you contacted Johnny 1st, he would have told you which one to replace, and you could have avoided all your frustration.
Great thanks to Johnny as his information was right on as usual.
Hard to put a value to his great information. Club membership is well worth it!

Problem Resolved, for those who may be interested in the mistake I made trying to resolve this high oil pressure problem I will explain. For those who read my earlier post I told you I had replaced the oil sending unit twice. This is what I have learned about the oil sending unit. Depending on whom I spoke with regarding my oil pressure problem I would hear these terms; oil sending unit, oil pressure unit, oil pressure switch, oil pressure sensor, oil sender. In my minds eye I thought all the times I heard these terms used they were talking about the same piece. That led me to replace the oil pressure switch twice. The oil pressure switch has two prongs sticking up that plug into a two wire plug. It was not until I realized that the oil pressure sensor was a complete different item that I was able to resolve my problem. The oil pressure sensor sits to the left of the oil pressure switch. I ordered the oil pressure sensor, put it in today and to my surprise; problem fixed, oil pressure reads right. Any questions, I will explain further.
James, Just wanted to let you know something I tried regarding the digital oil gauge showing high all the way over. I unplugged the oil sending unit, did not take it out just unplugged it, cranked the car while it was unplugged and it still went all the way over to the high side, I really not sure what that means, I will have to do some more research. dallas
While driving it , every so often it would be in middle, but most of time was all way to right to the high side, and it was that way for at least 2 years now, probably longer, so I put a few thousand miles on it this way and no issues, so I assume pressure is normal.
This spring I will be replacing the sending unit with the one Johnny sent me. He told me it is a common unit that fails, and many units out there will not function properly even from dealer, so I'm glad I called him! I would replace it now but its 20 degrees outside now, and I prefer to work on car with warmer weather, and it looks like it is in a tight spot to work on. BTW, there are 2 different sending units in similar area, Johnny told me it was the longer one that needs to be replaced, at least on my 1990.
I will let you know if it corrects the issue when I put in the new unit. Jim
James, Thanks so much for your input, mine is an 89, I have replaced the sending unit twice trying to correct the problem. Got the first one from a parts house, oil pressure did the same, all the way over to the high side. Found an original one with the original parts number on the internet, new old stock, bought it and put it on, same problem nothing changed. Hope you will get back with me after you put yours on and let me know how you came out. Did yours ever drop back and read normal while the car was just idling, then return to high when you accelerated. thanks dallas
Hi Dallas
I had same issue last couple years with one of my Allantes as I just put off doing anything about it, and last year in fall time I called Johnny about this and he told me it is the sending unit (mine is a 1990) , and to be careful as most units sold even at dealer are not functioning properly, and he sold me the proper unit. I just put off replacing it as car is fine, as it is just the gauge reading the sending unit is all and I was planning on putting it in this spring when I get the car out of hibernation and change the oil and just do it then. Give Johnny a call, and he will help you with that and get you the proper part.Johnny's the man!
Any ideas would be greatly appreciated, a few months ago I noticed my digital oil gauge was going all the way over to the high side; it goes over as soon as I start the vehicle. I have noticed once and a while when stopped at a light and the car was idling the gage would read about half way. As soon as I take off it goes all the way to the high side again. The car appears to be running fine, I have done the obvious, checked oil level, replace the oil sending unit (twice). I really don’t think the gage is faulty. If no one has any ideas I will take it somewhere and have the oil pressure checked manually with a gage to make sure it is not high. I have heard of problems with low oil pressure but not high. Thanks for your help.
