Gear indicator fault
Author Last Post
Still no solution to the gear indicator fault or downshifting problem. Maybe I'll visit a transmission shop and see what they say about the downshifting.
They adjusted the cable to get the gear indicator to line up better with the letter of the gear that it's in, but it still throws a fault and downshifts. Also the the positive stop for the lever is now closer to 3 and in addition to that, the parking brake doesn't release till the lever gets to that positive stop. So now if you want reverse you have to go past drive to the positive stop to release the parking brake then go back to reverse.

I'm going to have them adjust the cable back to where it was when I get the crankshaft seal replaced on Wednesday.
Barry, there is an adjustment for that. Its in the service manual, if you don't have let me know, we got them
He didn't look over the service manual yet, forgot to take it camping with him. I stop in again tomorrow.

Still getting the fault and still occasionally downshifting. Seems the only way to get it to shift up is to pop it into neutral then back to D. Works every time. Doesn't downshift with every fault thankfully. Fault clears itself a lot of times before I get a chance to pop it into N.
I only use D so I don't know about 2 or 3.
I did try moving from D to 3 then back to D but it didn't up shift. I have to move from D to N then back to D for it to up shift.

I told the mechanic the switch may be loose because I understand that is an issue with the Allantes. He only tightened the switch, didn't remove any wires or use any spray cleaners. He tried to adjust the cable to make the shift indicator line up better with the dear it's in, but couldn't get it to line up.

I gave him the service manual to look through over the weekend and will see him Tuesday to see if he came up a plan.

Barry:

Does it self downshift only when it is Drive or will it do the same self-downshift if you have it in 3 or 2? When it does self-downshift, does it shift back up if you move the shift lever from Drive (presuming you are in D) to 3 and back to D?

I assume that when it was in the shop the mechanic disconnected the neutral safety switch, cleaned the contacts, and reconnected making sure that the connectors snapped tightly.

Well, the fault came back today.
I had it in the shop today. The neutral switch was very loose. He tightened it and it will start in neutral and the back up lights work, so that part is good.

I did a little driving and it didn't downshift or show a gear indicator fault but that isn't unusual for the small amount of driving I did. More lengthy drives over the weekend will tell if it's cured.
This is an 87. I keep getting a gear indicator fault in the driver information center and boxes show around gear markings, P R N D 3 2 1 on the digital dash. Most of the time the fault clears by itself with no issues but sometimes, and it's happening more frequently, the trans downshifts by itself. This happens at any speed while just cruising along.

How can this be corrected?
